Army $2K Referral Bonus Program

Soldiers, USMA Cadets, ROTC Contracted Cadets, Future Soldiers, Army component retirees & DA Civilians may earn $2,000 Referral Bonus

The $2,000 Referral Bonus Program is suspended, effective July 1, for all new referrals. Referrals submitted after July 1 will not qualify for the referral bonus.

In addition, all referrals submitted before July 1 must enlist before Sept. 30, 2009, for the sponsor to qualify for the referral bonus payment. This suspension does not affect the Army Reserve or Army National Guard Recruiting Assistance Programs (AR-RAP/G-RAP) which are still available.

The Army Referral System-Sergeant Major of the Army Recruiting Team (ARS-SMART) is still available for sponsors to support the recruiting effort. Referrals submitted after July 1 that result in an enlistment in the Army or Army Reserve will qualify sponsors to receive the Sergeant Major of the Army coin and certificate, but no monetary payments. Future Soldiers will continue to submit referrals through ARS-SMART to qualify for advanced promotion.

Soldiers, USMA Cadets, ROTC Contracted Cadets, members of the Future Soldier Training Program, Army component retirees and Department of the Army Civilian employees can earn $2,000 for referring their acquaintances to Army and Army Reserve recruiters, if those referrals result in enlistment.

The Referral Bonus Program, begun as a pilot under a provision in the Fiscal Year 2006 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), was initially $1,000. The bonus amount was raised to $2,000 on Nov. 13, 2006.

(NOTE: Sponsors who provided referrals prior to Nov. 13, 2006, are only eligible for $1,000 Referral Bonus)

Soldiers, Future Soldiers, USMA Cadets, ROTC Contracted Cadets, Army component retirees and DA civilians may receive a Referral Bonus for referring anyone, except individuals that have served in the military previously and immediate family members. Immediate family members include spouse, parent (or step-parent), child (natural, adopted, or step-child), brother, or sister.

Those who are not eligible to receive a Referral Bonus include

  • Soldiers assigned to the U.S. Army Accessions Command, U.S. Army Recruiting Command, Cadet Command, U.S. Army Reserve Command/Retention and Transition Division, National Guard State Recruiting Commands and any other member of the Army serving in a recruiting or retention assignment
  • Soldiers and Army component retirees who are serving as instructors, assistant instructors or contracted instructors in the Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps (SROTC) program or Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program
  • Family members
  • Individuals assigned to duties regarding which eligibility for a bonus could, as determined by the Secretary of the Army, be perceived as creating a conflict of interest
  • Retired Department of the Army Civilians (unless they are also Army component retirees)

The $2,000 Referral Bonus will be payable in two lump sums as follows for referrals submitted on or after Nov. 13, 2006:

$1,000 will be paid to the eligible sponsor once the Soldier (referral) has commenced Basic Training. Payment requests will be sent to DFAS upon verification that the Soldier is in fact in Basic Training using the Army Training Requirements and Resources System (ATRRS). Payment should be received within 45 work days of request submission.

$1,000 will be paid to the eligible sponsor once the Soldier (referral) has completed and graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) or Advanced Individual Training (AIT). Payment requests will be sent to the Defense Finance & Accounting Service (DFAS) upon verification that the Soldier has completed and graduated from OSUT or AIT using ATRRS. Payment should be received within 45 work days of submission.

Qualified sponsors will receive a Sergeant Major of the Army Coin for the first referral resulting in an enlistment and a Sergeant Major of the Army Certificate for all subsequent referrals that enlist.

To be eligible for the Referral Bonus, referrals must be made via the Army Referral System-Sergeant Major of the Army Recruiting Team (ARS-SMART) referral process. The referral must be submitted through the ARS-SMART link at www.2k.army.com or through the USAREC 1-800 number dedicated to this program, 1-800-223-3735, ext. 6-0473.

In addition, the individual making the referral must provide the name of the acquaintance as a referral through the ARS-SMART site, before the acquaintance conducts an appointment with an Army or Army Reserve recruiter.
