Chi Running Improves Form and Workout

Sometimes while out jogging in New York City, I will see someone whose form is so awkward, I wish I could tap them on the shoulder and show them a video of what they really look like.

Danny Dreyer must feel like this every day. He founded “Chi Running”-- a running philosophy all about form.

"Proper form will help you to run faster, longer, more efficiently and injury free,” he explains. And it’s as easy this: leaning forward.

It sounds simple, but it’s the key to Dryer’s system -- combining elements of Tai Chi with running, relying on the body’s form and energy to increase results -- and it’s catching on. His book sales have grown each year, even though he doesn’t advertise. It’s all word of mouth.

His fans include athletes, military sergeants and doctors. Success stories range from men struggling to pass military basic training running speed tests, to 40-year-old mothers who are trying to get back into shape.

I caught up with Danny while he was holding a clinic in Central Park.

His clinic, book and DVD encourages people to turn back the clock. "The way our bodies are naturally built to run since we were toddlers needs to be re-learned," he says. He used Chi Running to compete, and place in the top 10, of more than 40 ultra-marathons (50 to 100 miles at time) without a major injury.

Danny explains that many people run standing straight upright and strike the ground with their heel first, which actually counters the forward energy and causes knee injuries.

After years of running that way himself, Tai Chi taught Danny a more efficient way, by maintaining good posture and alignment to lean forward, letting gravity propel him. Instead of using muscles to pick up the foot and bring the leg forward, leaning allowed him to pick up the heel and land the foot underneath, mid-sole, to balance for a short moment in time. “The legs move more like the wheels of a bike than a swinging pendulum,” he says.

Danny says this natural posture and alignment “totally rocked my boat and changed how I approached running, I didn't feel like I had even been out for a run.”

Chi Running also teaches stance, alignment, hand and shoulder relaxation techniques, stride length, cadence, body looseners, how to swing your arms properly -- and it offers practice drills, such as running in sand to inspect your foot-strike print.
