Remain Optimistic in Tough Times
“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”— Winston Churchill In these uncertain economic times it’s often difficult to find that “silver lining,” especially for those who were recently let go from their jobs. Some individuals become more proactive, using every resource available to them, while others tend to “sit on the sidelines” waiting for the turmoil to end. However, everyone can agree that it’s never fun to be downsized. I advise people to continue networking and being creative because in this market one never knows when an opportunity will present itself. A positive attitude in an unpleasant economy also helps to set you apart as a prospective candidate. After a layoff, many workers get concerned about their future and wonder if there’ll ever be a light at the end of the tunnel. The trick to get by in a tough job market is to be adaptable. Try to remain focused and optimistic, and be willing to try some new alternatives outside of your comfort zone. If it means taking a “bridge job” until the perfect new position becomes available, do it! What’s more, a part-time job, internship, or volunteer position will not only help pay bills and keep your spirits up, it may also help you get a foot in the door toward an even more rewarding new career. The only constant in life is change and no job lasts forever...certainly not in this difficult economy. Rather than look at the glass as being half empty become a rainmaker for yourself by being proactive, networking and taking risks. Now is the best time to take a shot at something new. When one door closes, another door opens. Optimism is based on hope and self-knowledge. Treat yourself well during this difficult time. That means exercise, eating right, getting sleep and finding time for recreation with family, loved ones and friends. Most people have been through exactly what you’re going through right now — there’s no need to shoulder the emotional burden all by yourself. Being unemployed can actually be an incredibly liberating and beneficial opportunity for hard-core careerists who have fallen into a rut or have been lulled into complacency by habit or routine. This current period of uncertainty should be looked at as a fortuitous opportunity to learn more about yourself, your skills and about what makes you unique. It's also a chance to show others (and yourself) that you are more than a one-trick pony, that there are many more skills for you to showcase and many more chapters for you to write in your career and life.
