Engines aren't the only things that can overheat. To help avoid dangerous conflicts with other drivers, the Transportation Department offers the following advice if you feel threatened.

  • Don't react. Avoid making eye contact, and don't drive in a way that could be viewed as confrontational, such as tailgating or accelerating.
  • Cooperate with other drivers and give them room to merge into traffic. Leave enough space around your car to pull away from other vehicles.
  • Lock your doors.
  • If you think you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station or public area to get help.

To help prevent your own case of road rage, take steps to avoid stress while driving. Allow more time for your trip, don't take another driver's actions personally and don't drive when you're already angry.
