What Is JTF CapMed?

Four years ago the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) announcement was made, which announced the integration of two of the Army and the Navy's prominent medical centers: Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) and National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) and the development of a robust, community hospital at Fort Belvoir. Once BRAC was made law, it was evident military medicine in the National Capital Region (NCR) would never be the same again.

In September 2007, the Joint Task Force National Capital Region Medical, referred to as JTF CapMed, a fully functional Standing Joint Task Force, was established by the Deputy Secretary of Defense. Located on the NNMC campus and reporting directly to the Secretary of Defense through the Deputy Secretary of Defense, this Command is charged with leading the way for the effective and efficient consolidation and realignment of military health care within the NCR, and the execution of extraordinarily complex BRAC construction projects and realignments.

I serve as this Command's leader and I know that the future Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda will be a world-class medical center at the hub of the nation's premier regional health care system serving our military and our nation. We will deliver integrated health care in the NCR, ensure readiness, and execute the BRAC business plan to achieve the vision.

To accomplish this unified medical mission, the medical services of the Army, Navy, and Air Force in the NCR will integrate to ensure the best utilization of resources available which will provide the best care available to wounded warriors, eliminate redundancies, enhance clinical care, promote health professions education and joint training, and enhance military medical research opportunities. This integration will also further the growth of transformative efforts with government, community and private sector partners.
