Webinar on MiCare, Personal Health Records

Webinar on MiCare, the Military's Personal Health Record

Today we hear from Col. Keith L. Salzman, M.D., M.P.H., chief, Western Regional Medical Command/Madigan Army Medical Center Informatics.

The Military Health System is moving closer to providing all its beneficiaries with MiCARE, a portable personal health record. The personal health record will allow beneficiaries to control and determine how they share their health information.

MiCare allows patients access to some of the same information stored in AHLTA, the military's electronic health record, as I mentioned in June. The process of moving electronic health record information to a personal health record is fairly easy, and once it is moved the patient has control of his or her information. Service members at Madigan Army Medical Center at Fort Lewis, Wash., are using the system, which was launched there in 2008.

I recently had the opportunity to discuss the MiCare pilot program with Government Executive in a Webinar that focused on how MiCare can help agencies meet President Obama's mandate for streamlined transition of health records between the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. The Webinar touches on general personal health record capabilities, use of Microsoft HealthVault and Google Health software, VA's MyHealtheVet, social networking support groups and more.
