Improved Galley Opens at Navy Academy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The King's Court Servery at the U.S. Naval Academy's (USNA) King Hall Galley opens Sept. 10, giving the midshipmen full access to dining services at the galley since Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Washington began major renovation efforts at the historic building 18 months ago.

The occasion was marked by a ribbon cutting ceremony Sept. 8, attended by USNA Superintendent Vice Adm. Mike Miller, midshipmen and construction managers from NAVFAC Washington. Most dining services at King Hall have been underway since Aug. 18 when the project was delivered to the academy's midshipmen food service division.

"They're in full swing," said Tom French, NAVFAC Washington project manager. "There has been no difference in food quality [compared to services at the temporary food service preparation facility]."

"Today's ribbon cutting ceremony signified achieving this milestone which incorporates higher quality, healthier food and a much more labor and energy-efficient facility which will serve the brigade for years to come," said French.

French estimates the $41 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act-funded renovation project is more than 90 percent complete with only a few minor project items to wrap up. All construction will be complete by December.
