Marine Pilot Survives Harrier Crash

A Marine pilot was in stable condition in a Florida hospital Monday after his jet crashed Sunday night on a training mission off the Norfolk-based amphibious assault ship Kearsarge.

Capt. Jarrod Klement, assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 266, ejected from the plane and was airlifted to Shands Cancer Hospital at the University of Florida, Gainesville. His injuries are not life-threatening, the Marine Corps said.

Klement's AV-8B Harrier, from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Lejeune, N.C., crashed on the Navy's Pinecastle Range Complex in the Ocala National Forest, near the town of Salt Springs, around 8 p.m. He was participating in pre-deployment training.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
