Man Rescued From Necanicum River

ASTORIA, Ore. - The Coast Guard rescued a man from the Necanicum River near Gearhart, Ore., after his canoe flipped in heavy surf.

Seaside, Ore., 911 contacted Group/Air Station Astoria requested assistance with the search for the 52-year-old man who was seen to flip over in his canoe.  An MH-60 helicopter crew was dispatched to the scene where they were able to successfully rescue the man from the water.

The man, who was not wearing a personal flotation device, was taken to shore to be examined by local emergency service technicians.  He had no injuries.

The Coast Guard recommends the use of lifejackets or other personal flotation devices whenever a person is in a boat on the water.  The already cold waters of the Pacific Northwest become much colder in the fall and winter months and can quickly sap a swimmer's strength.  It is also recommended that boaters wear brightly colored clothing so that searchers will have an easier time spotting them in the event of a capsizing or other emergency.
