CG Rescues Man With Broken Leg

BOSTON -  An Air Station Cape Cod Jayhawk helicopter hoisted an injured crewman from a New Bedford, Mass.-based fishing vessel 97 nautical miles southeast of New Bedford.

The fishing vessel Lady Patricia contacted Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England reporting that a 54-year-old crewman broke his leg and was in severe pain.

On scene weather was 10-foot seas with 25-knot winds, but the crewman was hoisted safely aboard the helicopter. The patient was transferred to a waiting ambulance and taken to Falmouth Hospital.

"The crewman was in a lot of pain and, with the vessel being so far out at sea, we wanted to get him off the boat and to shore safely," said Chief Petty Officer David Gilbert in the First Coast Guard District Command Center in Boston.  "He really needed medical attention, and we were happy to help him get access to the care he needed."
