Web Allows GI to Meet Newborn Twins

A laptop with a microphone and webcam gave an Army firefighter stationed in Afghanistan the chance to see his newborn twin boys two hours after their birth Wednesday at Meriter Hospital.

An early delivery prevented him from seeing a live birth via Skype, an online telephone service, as originally planned for July 2. But new father Jordan Davids, of Jefferson, Wisconsin did get to see his sons in their isolettes after his shift ended.

Megan Trewyn, of Lake Mills, Wisconsin gave birth to Aaron and Johnathan Davids, each weighing about 5 pounds, just after 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Davids will be home from Afghanistan for a two-week leave in October before his scheduled final return in February.

While a webcam isn't quite the same as actually being there, Davids said it's much better than not being able to see them at all.

"I mean, it's a lot better than having to wait a few months to see them," Davids said as his mother Jackie Galusha, of Sullivan, Wisconsin held up the laptop to baby Aaron's isolette. "This is amazing."

Trewyn and Davids said they talk to each other every day on Skype, the next best thing to seeing each other in person.

"The time difference is hard, but we still do it," Trewyn said. "If it wasn't for Skype, I'd go crazy."

This was Meriter's first online family reunion, said spokeswoman Mae Knowles.
