Wounded Warrior Aims for Paralympics
Week of August 18, 2008
With the world's attention currently focused on the Olympic Games in Beijing, a former 3rd Infantry Division Soldier, severely wounded in Iraq, is gearing up to compete in the Paralympic Games that open Sept. 6, 2008. Former Spc. Scott Winkler set his sights on winning gold medals in discus, shot put and javelin. But he said he is just as committed to bringing home new hope to others with disabilities through the organization he cofounded, Champions Made From Adversity. Winkler was deployed to Tikrit, Iraq, in May 2003, when an accident left him in a wheelchair with both legs paralyzed. For more information, visit the Champions Made From Adversity website and the International Paralympic Committee's website.
