More than 10,000 Soldiers and veterans have been issued commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) since a Department of Transportation program recognizing the driving experience the Soldiers received while in uniform began in 2011. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA's) Military Skills Test Waiver Program grants state licensing agencies, including the District of Columbia, the authority to waive the skills test portion of the CDL application for active-duty or recently separated veterans who possess at least two years of safe driving experience operating a military truck or bus. Each state now has a waiver. The program is not limited to transportation military occupational specialties (MOSs). For more information, visit the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration website or contact your state department of safety or transportation. An application for the Military Skills Test Waiver is available here.
