March is brain injury awareness month. A mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), better known as a concussion, causes an alteration of the person's mental status. Concussions may be dismissed and go untreated. Symptoms of TBI include confusion, headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears or nausea. Some people do have more persistent symptoms, which can include trouble sleeping, irritability or blurred vision. For more information, visit the U.S. Army Medical Department's Brain Injury Awareness webpage and the Defense and Veterans' Brain Injury Center's website.
