The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command's Computer Crime Investigative Unit (CCIU) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) offer the following tips to stay safe while shopping online: (1) check out the seller; (2) read the return policies; (3) if name-brand items are sold at an extremely low price, they could be counterfeit or stolen; (4) do not fall for a false e-mail or pop-up or click on any links within them; (5) look for signs that the website uses a secure connection when you buy products; (6) secure your home computer with anti-virus and anti-spyware software and a firewall; (7) pay by credit card; (8) print and save records of your online transactions. To learn more about online safety and the CCIU, visit the FTC's OnGuard Online site and the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
