The Department of Defense Education Activity recently adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for math and languages arts. The CCSS is a state-led effort. Forty-six states -- including two territories and the District of Columbia -- have accepted the standards. The standards eliminate redundancies or gaps students may run into when they move to another state or go to overseas DoDEA schools. Implementation of the new standards will occur once teachers across the board are trained, could be as early as the 2013-2014 school year. For more information about CCSS, visit the Common Core States Standards Initiative website at www.corestandards.org.
