Mt. Soledad Cross Safe for Now

A federal court ruled that the Mt. Soledad Cross is constitutional and can stay on federal property. This is the latest decision in response to a series of lawsuits that have been filed against the nearly 30-foot-high cross (43 feet with base) over the last 20 years, beginning in 1988 when an atheist first sued the city of San Diego. Attorneys are expected to appeal the decision to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the case is expected to find its way eventually to the United States Supreme Court. For more information about the cross, visit the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial website.
