The U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case on Oct. 7 to determine whether a 5-foot cross erected as a war memorial by veterans on a rock in California's Mojave Desert 75 years ago must be torn down. Congress voted to block removal of the cross by park officials at the Mojave National Preserve, but an appeals court ruled that maintaining a Christian symbol on public property suggested an unconstitutional government endorsement. The Supreme Court will consider whether an individual can even bring a lawsuit like this before weighing whether the cross can remain.
