Sailors have many resources available - including their ship's legal department - to take care of issues concerning their personal lives. Sailors can come to legal for assistance with myriad personal issues or concerns such as writing wills, requesting a power of attorney and reviewing legal documents including house and car loans or even orders. Legal can also help Sailors with civilian court issues. When the ship deploys, Sailors who leave children with grandparents or friends should get a power of attorney. When the child is sick, the babysitter does not have authorization to take the child to the hospital. The power of attorney is a document that authorizes someone else to sign your name. This is handy for paying bills and anything needing authorization by an absent member. for more information, contact your local legal department.
