Insomnia and Combat Veterans

A recent study at the University of Pittsburgh has shown that insomnia among U.S. combat veterans returning from Iraq is as severe as that seen in patients with chronic insomnia. The researchers compared veterans with post-deployment adjustment disorders to insomnia patients and good sleepers, and found that the veterans displayed significantly more severe disruptive nocturnal behaviors, such as nightmares and body movements, than people in the other two groups. The researchers also found that the veterans preferred relaxation therapy and pharmacological treatments for their insomnia. The findings were recently presented at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.
