Later this week, on October 13, the U.S. Navy marks its 238th birthday. The Navy traces its roots back to the privateers that were employed to attack British commerce in the early days of the American Revolution. On October 13, 1775 the Continental Congress established a small naval force, hoping that a small navy would be able to offset the uncontested exercise of British sea power.
