Gaining more control over your finances is a good New Year's resolution. The first thing to do to avoid financial disasters is to have a strategy for your finances. Another technique is to save 10 percent of your paycheck and place it in an account you cannot touch until you retire. An excellent account for servicemembers is the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) where you do not pay federal income taxes on your contributions or earnings until you withdraw the money. You should also know how much is deposited in your bank account(s) every pay period. Finally, set up a fund for emergencies.
