Recent reports linking varenicline (Chantix) - a prescription drug - to hallucinations and even suicide, prompted the Military Health System to re-issue its Medication Safety Notice concerning the use of the drug in smoking cessation programs. While the drug is not on the TRICARE formulary, many MHS patients have prescriptions for it. It is highly recommended that a doctor be consulted immediately in rare cases of psychiatric side effects including nightmares, paranoia, or feelings of suicide. For more information, read the DoD Medication Safety Notice issued by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer and the FDA's Public Health Advisory on Chantix.
