U.S. Savings Bonds can be purchased in electronic form directly with the U.S. Treasury over the Internet. In addition paper savings bonds can be converted into electronic form and held in an account with the government. Both can be done by opening a TreasuryDirect account. Electronic savings bonds carry the same interest rates and maturity periods as paper bonds, but, unlike paper bonds, you do not have to wait for them to be mailed to you. Instead, all you need is access to the Internet. Treasury bills, notes, and bonds are also available. For more information, visit the TreasuryDirect website at www.treasurydirect.gov.
