Because of state budget cuts, funeral directors throughout the State of Rhode Island have been notified that the Rhode Island National Guard will no longer supply firing squads for military honors at funerals except for those who have been killed in action, were Medal of Honor winners, general officers or served at least 20 years in the military. In Rhode Island, typical military funerals included a bugler playing "Taps," a flag-folding ceremony and a firing squad -- a nine-gun salute for a military funeral or 21-gun salute for a person killed in the line of duty.
