Colorado Congressman Mark Udall and Missouri Congressman John Salazar recently sponsored legislation (H.R. 6268) that would direct Colorado-based Fort Carson and Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri to operate pre-deployment counseling programs, and provide prompt and effective treatment to returning servicemembers. The bill would also give active-duty servicemembers access to readjustment and mental health counseling from veterans centers and extend military survivor benefits to families of servicemembers who commit suicide after a history of combat-related health problems.
