Absentee Voters Face Deadline

The elections may not be until November, but servicemembers and their families only have until Aug. 21, 2008 to register for absentee voting. The Federal Voting Assistance Program offers servicemembers, their family members and citizens living overseas the opportunity to vote for all local and state elections within their state of residence, regardless of where they are living at the time. After registering, either at the FVAP website, or through the voting assistance officer, an absentee ballot is mailed to the registered voter. At that point the voter fills out the form and sends it through the mail to cast their vote. Voters who wait until the last minute to register, should be aware that each state has different ballot deadlines and registration requirements differ from state to state. The FVAP web site provides a complete list of state and county, requirements and deadlines. More information is available at the FVAP web site.
