USS BONHOMME RICHARD, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Bonhomme Richard's (LHD 6) Second Class Association (SCA) hosted the ship's daily afternoon group physical training, known as "PT Challenge" July 25.
Networking and support are the main purposes for the Second Class Association (SCA) aboard Bonhomme Richard for E-5's who are in transition to the upper chain of command, said SCA President Aviation Survival Equipmentman 2nd Class Eddie H. Veyran.
"With the association it's easier for us to get to know each other and bring the departments together," said Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd Class Sean D. Litzenberger, an active member of the SCA and leader of the PT Challenge.
SCA offers a variety of activities including training sessions held for Basic Military Requirement exams, SCA influence morale and physical fitness aboard BHR.
"We boost the morale of the whole ship from E-1 to O6 and above, through our fundraising events, volunteer services and activities such as the PT Challenge, which is open to everyone," said Veyran.
Just recently, the SCA took part in the Standdown 2009 at San Diego High School, which benefited homeless veterans in the San Diego area.
"Basically the SCA was there representing the Navy and the Bonhomme Richard and to help the veterans," said Litzenberger.
Some of the upcoming activities planned include a fundraising pizza sale. All proceeds raised go toward supporting the SCA social activities in port and while deployed.
"We appreciate all the support that the ship's crew has given us, we especially appreciate the support of the chain of command, it means a lot," said Litzenberger.
The SCA aboard Bonhomme Richard has been in existence for about four years and has 50 active members, said Veyran.
Veyran explained SCA members meet once a week. Members who join find out about the group entirely through word of mouth. He said they do not have any formal means of advertising their group's benefits, which can include special liberty privileges in overseas ports while on deployment.
"Every E-5 is invited to attend, Marine or Sailor, it does not matter," said Veyran.
