San Antonio Sailors Support Culture of Fitness

USS SAN ANTONIO, At Sea (NNS) -- Sailors from the amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) are finding it easier to prepare for their physical fitness assessments (PFA) with the implementation of exercise programs and healthy menu choices.

San Antonio offers a fitness enhancement program (FEP) to Sailors who want to get in better shape and increase their overall performance for the PFA.

"We hold FEP sessions on the flight deck to make time for Sailors to work out with us," said Chief Fire Controlman (SW) Amilcar Huezo, San Antonio's command fitness leader (CFL). "We want to help Sailors who find it difficult to exercise because of their work hours."

CFLs monitor Sailors' weight and performance during FEP sessions. Since deploying in late August, San Antonio Sailors have improved their performance through these closely-monitored sessions.

"Since the beginning of the deployment, our Sailors have been improving by losing weight, losing inches around their waists and building endurance," said Huezo.

A variety of exercises are offered during FEP sessions.

"We try to keep our exercises broadened to help Sailors in all areas that we test them for during the PRT, like arm and abs movements," added Huezo.

Exercise, along with a balanced, healthy diet, are key components to a achieving a better fitness lifestyle. The culinary specialists aboard San Antonio ensure that healthy, nutritious diet options are offered in San Antonio's galley.

"We have a wonderful salad bar aboard that is available for Sailors who want to pick a more healthy approach when dieting," said Culinary Specialist 1st Class Helen Speight.

With the U.S. Navy's focus on a culture of fitness, ships have implemented many programs to help keep Sailors fit.

"There are six months between each PRT," said Yeoman 1st Class Richard Campbell. "The Navy does everything it can to get us prepared."

San Antonio's leadership supports these methods of helping Sailors not only build endurance but have a healthier lifestyle.

"It speaks a lot for individuals to be improving themselves not just for the sake of the military, but for their lifestyle as well," said Chief Personnel Specialist (SW/AW) Romeo Perez. "With all the support from leadership, we are set up for success."

San Antonio is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet Area of Operations as part of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group to conduct maritime security operations (MSO). MSO helps develop security in the maritime environment. From security arises stability that results in global economic prosperity. MSO complements the counterterrorism and security efforts of regional nations and seek to disrupt violent extremists' use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material.
