Pensacola Hosts Ultimate Frisbee Tournament

PENSACOLA, Fla. (NNS) -- Officers and staff from Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola's Public Works Department (PWD), along with other public works officers (PWO) from different states and countries, participated in an Ultimate Frisbee tournament at Barrancas ball fields, Jan. 31.
Ultimate Frisbee is the unofficial sport of the Civil Engineer Corps (CEC), and the routine sport usually played every Friday, was much more competitive last week with the additional CEC officers in Pensacola for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast Operations Conference. While all of the officers normally play Ultimate Frisbee at their own installations, the PWO had to change the schedule to include the additional crowd that was in town for the conference which was hosted by the Pensacola PWD.
"We try to bring all of the senior CEC officers together a couple times a year," said NAVFAC Southeast Commanding Officer Capt. Michael Blount. "It is important for them to work together on common strategies and learn from each other's experiences."
Seventy-five PWOs, deputy PWOs and resident officers in charge of construction came from seven different states, Puerto Rico and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to attend the conference. With so many CEC officers in one location, it was inevitable that they would get together for a friendly, but competitive game of Ultimate Frisbee.
"The teams were divided to provide the younger junior officers the opportunity to show the senior leaders what they were made of," said Pensacola Public Works officer Cmdr. Kristina Nielsen.
Early Thursday morning, the CEC officers played a double elimination tournament with each game lasting 20 minutes. In the end, the two senior teams battled through the final game with the team led by Nielsen winning the championship by a flip of the golden frisbee.
"All in all, the senior leaders proved to be the most experienced players and took home the golden frisbee," said Nielsen. "Everyone had a great time."
