2008 Federal Tax Rate Schedules

These tax rate schedules are provided to help you estimate your 2008 federal income tax. They also make it easy to see which tax bracket you’re in. As you can see in the first table below, for example, on a single return, the 25 percent bracket encompasses taxable income between $32,550 and $78,850. If you fall in that bracket, then every extra dollar of taxable income adds 25 cents to your income tax bill. When taxable income exceeds $78,850, you slip into the 28% bracket.

That does not mean the government gets 28 cents of every dollar you earn, but rather of every dollar of taxable income between $78,850 and $164,500.
