Navy Holds Easter Eggstravaganza
Navy News | March 25, 2008
OAK HARBOR, Wash. - Naval Air Station Whidbey Island celebrated Easter with its annual egg hunt titled Easter "Eggstravaganza" at Costen-Turner Park, March 22.
More that 1,000 plastic eggs were placed in five areas, set up for different age groups and on each field, there were also two golden coins for each of 10 special gift baskets. "Preparation for the hunt began about four months ago which included finding a location and ordering the eggs," said Sherry Yates, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Liberty Program manager. "I think the event today was just outstanding. We changed locations from the Seaplane Base, last year. I think getting this many people to come out for an event on a Saturday afternoon after changing location was awesome for the military families." Upon completion of the egg hunt, a brunch with the Easter Bunny was held at Admiral Nimitz Hall. There were 120 reservations for the brunch and the galley provided 100 hard-boiled eggs for children to dye. "This is the first year we've partnered with the galley offering a brunch and the participation is outstanding for being the first time and more than likely it will be something we repeat in the future," said Yates. Approximately 20 people volunteered to help with organizing and running the event. The volunteers shared a general feeling of wanting to help the children get the most enjoyment out of the day. "I volunteered in the spirit of Easter to help all the children out and make it fun for them," Aviation Machinist's Mate Airman Apprentice Eric Sosa-Cerezo, a volunteer from Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit. "I thought it'd be fun, because I like doing volunteer work and I love children," Culinary Specialist Seaman (AW) Ambrosia Stone, Electronic Attack Squadron 138, who played the Easter Bunny for the day. "Anything I can do for them, I will." Those who participated in the egg hunt were grateful the base took the time to sponsor the event and do something the whole family could enjoy. "It's pretty cool to see the Easter egg hunt on the Navy base," said Aircrew Survival Equipmentman 1st Class (AW) Jason Bachman, Fleet Readiness Center Northwest." I've got four children I brought out here, I had a good time and they had a blast. It turned out to be a nice sunny day and the children had a lot of fun."
