CG Investigates Vessel Allision

Cleveland, OH. -- U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Cleveland is investigating the bulk carrier Calumet's allision with a concrete wall along the Old River today at approximately 12:30 p.m.

MSU Cleveland reported no pollution in the river and no injuries to the crew.

MSU investigators conducted alcohol breathalyzer tests on the crew, and an agent for the shipping company is arranging for additional drug testing.

The Calumet, which is currently moored at the Ontario Stone Corp. dock, will not be allowed to leave the dock until a repair proposal is approved and repairs are completed.

Operated by Grand River, the Calumet offloaded stone at the Ontario Stone Corp. After unloading the stone, the ship proceeded to pick up a load of salt at the International Salt Company, when the ship allided with the wall.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
