Hispanic Engineer Awards Seeks Navy Nominations
Navy News | PO2 Gabriel Owens | September 07, 2006
Millington, TN. - The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is accepting nominations for the 2007 Technical Achievement Recognition (STAR) Awards through Sept. 30.

SHPE is a leading social-technical organization whose primary function is to enhance and achieve the potential of Hispanics in engineering, math and science. Its STAR Award provides an excellent opportunity to recognize outstanding Navy personnel who have distinguished themselves in these fields.

Categories include The Hispanic in Technology Award, Professional Role Model Award and the Promising Engineer Award.

“The advantages to be garnered from an organization’s diversity are limited solely by that organization’s ability to use the potential of each individual,” said Rear Adm. Joseph Kilkenny, commander, Navy Recruiting Command.

“The impressive accomplishments of Hispanics in science and technology exemplify the qualities and traits of the Navy values," he added. "The United States Navy is committed to becoming the employer of choice for people of all races, genders and ethnicities. It is of utmost importance to not just the Navy, but our nation, as well. I congratulate the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers on their part in recognizing the award winners.”

Recipients of the STAR Awards will be recognized during SHPE’s 30th National Technical and Career Conference Jan. 10-13 in Denver, Colo.

Past Navy awardees include Lt. Cmdr. Eduardo Fernandez for Hispanics in Technology (Government) and Lt. Cmdr. Edward Robledo for Most Promising Engineer.
