Public TV Faces Budget Ax in Congress

Public television executives say the Corporation for Public Broadcasting could go under if proposed budget cuts are passed by the U.S. Congress.
The House passed a $60 billion spending-reduction measure that would eliminate funding for the corporation and its public TV and radio stations.
"If this House-passed bill stands, it would endanger hundreds of public radio and television stations that serve as educational, informational and cultural lifelines for millions of people nationwide," said Patrick Butler, president of the Public Media Association, an initiative of the Association of Public Television Stations and National Public Radio.
Daily Variety said Sunday that officials hoped to convince the Senate not to pull the plug on their services. The Senate is controlled by the presumably friendlier Democrats; however, the current resolve to slash government spending makes the task more daunting.
