Expect big Surprises in Mad Men's Third Season

Tenley Woodman - Boston Herald

Did Betty have the baby? Did Joan marry her abusive fiance? How is Pete holding up now that he knows Peggy gave away their child?

For lovers of AMC's "Mad Men," Sunday's season three premiere can't get here fast enough.

It has been nearly a year since the season two finale aired and fans of the philandering, fashionable crew at Sterling Cooper want answers.

Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) admitted to Pete (Vincent Kartheiser) that their office fling produced a child. Betty (January Jones) told Don (Jon Hamm) she's pregnant, and ever confident Joan (Christina Hendricks) was raped by her intended.

The lasting effects of these twists on the characters is anyone's guess. The clever folks at AMC have kept the upcoming twists under wraps. (The network hasn't even aired a trailer with preview scenes.)

But a paparazzi photographer did manage to capture one telling tidbit from the set.

The image shows Don and Betty getting into a car with a baby.

So she did have the baby?

Not so fast.

"Mad Men" is fond of flashbacks. Bloggers theorize this picture could be nothing more than a scene looking back at happier days in the Draper household.

Until now, "Mad Men" has been a celebration of bad behaviors veiled in curve-hugging dresses and dapper suits. It is probably safe to say Don and company will be dealing with the fallout of post-Kennedy America.

The season three poster supports this in a symbolic sense. Don is shown sitting in his office waist-high in water.

This could be the end of the charade and the start of an ugly morning after.

It's about time these folks got a hangover.

Last season Don and his randy boss Roger Sterling (John Slattery) were called out for their infidelities.

Roger's frat-party attitude could catch up with him this season. Duck Phillip's (Mark Moses) British contact Lane Pryce (Jared Harris) bought a piece of Sterling Cooper, remember?

In interviews on the official "Mad Men" Web site, the cast teases viewers with the promise that the more things change in season three, the more they stay the same.

So does that mean art director Salvatore Romano (Bryan Batt) is still in the closet?

The actors promise that the first episode will have enough surprises to make the show's top 10 most shocking moments list.

Is it really possible to top Freddy Rumsen (Joel Murray) peeing himself?

Guess we'll have to watch and see.
