Stone-Cold Cynics' Viewpoint on Coyotes Suitors

Hockey News - Ray Slover - SportingNews.com

A conspiracy theorists' take on news that four groups have emerged as Phoenix Coyotes suitors willing to keep the bankrupt team in Phoenix:

Geez, Gary Bettman, now you come up with a flock of competitive bidders? Where was this posse before Jim Balsillie entered the picture?

Given time and the necessity to diss Balsillie, the NHL not only put forward Jerry Reinsdorf and his low-ball bid for the team, now there are three others.

The scenarios are interesting, in a paranoid sense, because one group has a Toronto connection through the Canadian Football League. Another has a Las Vegas link.

Wow, could these guys be interested in joining the NHL to be in line for -- swallow hard here -- potential expansion teams? Vegas and a second Toronto team had buzz long before it became evident the Coyotes were road kill.

And is there a buddy factor at work with Reinsdorf? Does the NHL seriously believe, a cynical observer would suggest, it's wiser to have the Coyotes sold on the cheap? Would that not deflate the value of other franchises?

Look, we're happy as clams that other parties have decided to enter the bidding. Without knowing the specifics of the bids, and without knowing the identity of the fourth group -- what's with that? -- our limited understanding of economics tells us competition will only drive up the bidding for the team.

But if the NHL took over the Coyotes, as it seems to claim, way back in November -- returning to the paranoid skeptic's viewpoint here -- why did it take until a few days before the bankruptcy judge's pronouncement for three new suitors to appear?
