We are pulling for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. And that's no slight intended toward the Detroit Red Wings; nor is it favoritism toward the Pittsburgh Penguins. We simply want this series to go the max, because at its best it's been a great culmination to an outstanding playoff season.
Petr Sykora replaced Miroslav Satan in Game 6's only lineup change. We'll see if Sykora has the same effect on the Penguins as Pavel Datsyuk did for the Red Wings.
The game began with a sense of urgency for the Penguins, playing in front of an Igloo full of fans. The Red Wings focused on rolling four lines, getting matchups they wanted and keeping players involved in the game. The last thing coach Mike Babcock wanted was to see tired players on the ice.
Marc-Andre Fleury made a big early save, and the Penguins had good opportunities, building to a power play after a goaltender interference penalty against Henrik Zetterberg.
The Penguins had a great chance to jam the puck in against Chris Osgood on a goal-mouth scramble, but the Wings killed the penalty. Another big kill for the Wings; another missed opportunity for the Penguins.
Quick changes and defensive pressure around the net were big early for the Wings. Blocking passes, blocking shots -- and Osgood saves when the shots came through -- were keeping the Penguins at bay. Osgood was strong, coming out to stop a Bill Guerin shot off the rush. Later, Osgood calmly reached up a gloved another Guerin shot.
