Sporting News previews the Black Knights as we count down our preseason top 100 college football teams leading into the season opener on Sept. 2.
Last year: 5-7
2010 projected record: 6-6
Why we know we're right: The Black Knights continue to trend up—and yes, No. 79 is a step in the right direction for this program—thanks to a return to its roots. An option offense that finished 16th in the country returns four offensive linemen, and a solid defense brings back eight starters led by end Josh McNary (12.5 sacks in '09). A soft schedule, plus solid special teams, should leave Army in position to build on its 2009 performance.
Why we might be wrong: As a freshman last season, quarterback Trent Steelman didn't prove he could move the ball through the air. His 637 passing yards won't cut it if Army hopes to compete with tougher teams such as Rutgers and Notre Dame. The defense needz more muscle inside and again could be susceptible to strong rushing teams.
Our confidence level in this pick: High. An opening stretch of Eastern Michigan, Hawaii and North Texas sets up for a 3-0 start. If Steelman improves and the offensive line holds up, a .500 finish becomes likely.
Judgment day: Dec. 11 vs. Navy. The Knights will never play a bigger game, even if it's for a national championship. Beating the Mids last year would have made the Knights bowl eligible. The same could be true in 2010.
Coach's job security: Strong. Rich Ellerson, an option maestro, energized Army upon his arrival last year. Break Army's run of 13 straight losing seasons, and he should expect a long contract extension.
Grading the positions: QB (C-), RB (C+), WR/TE (D), OL (C), DL (C), LB (B), DB (B-), ST (B-).
