One of the easiest and most effective ways of wringing more accuracy out of your AR is with a trigger upgrade.

Several manufacturers (including makers of the guns) offer replacement triggers that are superior to most standard AR triggers, with less creep, lighter pull, adjustability, etc.

Among the best is Timney Triggers with three AR models ranging in price from $195 to $260. We got ahold of a Competition model with a 3-pound trigger pull and tried it out. We love it and recommend it highly. Best of all, it's easy to install. Here's how.

1) Yank the upper and set it aside. With an extra-long hex wrench, reach inside the grip and remove the bolt that holds it to the receiver. Be careful removing the grip, as it secures a spring-loaded plunger to the safety lever. Remove the plunger and safety lever.

2) Tap out the two pins securing the trigger assembly and remove it. (Using boxes like this gives you a space for the pins to go, protects from mars, and catches pins so they don't get lost.)

3) Insert the Timney Trigger assembly and secure it with the two pins, and insert the safety lever.

4) Hold the hammer, pull the trigger, and ease the hammer ahead out of the way, and slide the top spring arms out of the way so you can access the two hex screws in the Timney gold housing inside the receiver.

5) Tighten them very snugly, and then insert the two extra hex screws provided and screw them down on top of the first two. (For clarity, the photo here shows the housing before insertion into the receiver.)

6) Reinsert the plunger (pointed end in) and reinstall the spring and grip.

7) Test the operation of the trigger and safety selector before loading.

8) Go make some noise!
