An 85-year-old Florida man and his 65-year-old helper used a pitchfork and a frying pan to convince an intruder to leave the man's house.
Bobby Smith of Jacksonville, who served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, told The Times-Union of Jacksonville he was angry about the invasion. He was working in his garden April 9 when Luvina Sones, who was making lunch, came out to tell him there was someone in the house.
"I was angry; I was upset; and I was as mad as all outdoors," Smith told the newspaper Wednesday. "If I'd had my gun, like I normally would have, I would have shot him because he was in my home. I don't like people hurting my family or my home."
Smith said the man, who displayed a gun, told him to "gimme what you got" and took his wallet before knocking him down. Smith went after the man, using a frying pan full of potatoes Sones handed him.
He then picked up the pitchfork and stuck the intruder.
The intruder, bleeding, headed out the door without his baseball cap. He still had Smith's wallet but a police K-9 dog found it nearby and carried it back in its mouth, presenting it to Smith with a bow.
A neighbor told police the intruder, naked from the waist up, had stolen a shirt off a clothesline before heading for Smith's house.
