Coast Guard Recovers Cruise Ship Passenger

Alexia Campbell - Sun-Sentinel

Miami -- The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a missing cruise ship crew member after a two-hour search off the South Florida coast Friday morning.

The Royal Caribbean Majesty of the Seas made a distress call around 4:30 a.m., saying that Roberto Mado, 31, had gone overboard off the Port of Miami.

Authorities searched a 3-mile area around the spot where Mado was last seen, Coast Guard Petty Officer Barry Bena said.

A Coast Guard boat found Mado treading water at about 6:15 a.m. about five miles from the Fowey Rocks near Biscayne Bay. He appeared to be fine, Bena said.

He was transferred to a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue boat and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

WSVN-Ch. 7 broadcast video of Mado walking off the rescue boat and wrapped in a yellow blanket.

No details were released on how Mado ended up in the water.

The Majesty of the Seas was on its way to Miami from Key West after a four-day cruise to the Bahamas.
