Brews Might Cool off Brouhaha

Joe Dwinell - Boston Herald

Former President Nixon had ping-pong diplomacy. How about beer pong diplomacy for President Obama?

The president is expected to host Harvard University's Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley as early as this week for some suds and sensitivity.

The professor and the patrolman are ready to raise a glass to harmony at the White House after a week of hard feelings over allegations of racial profiling after Crowley arrested Gates on July 16 outside his home.

Obama, who riled cops nationwide after saying Cambridge police "acted stupidly" in cuffing Gates, is having both men over to talk it out.

But what brand of beer should be served?

The sergeant is partial to Blue Moon beer. The president is an all-American Budweiser drinker, and the professor says he likes Beck's and Red Stripe.

The brewers of Blue Moon told the Herald they're just happy beer rather than bad feelings are on tap.

"People have been brought together over a beer for ages," said Julian Green, spokesman for Blue Moon, the nation's largest craft brand.

"We haven't been asked to supply any beer for the White House," Green added.

Asked if just one Blue Moon will do the trick, Green said it wouldn't matter: "From the first taste they'll get the full flavor" of the history of the moment.
