DVD Review: The Princess and the Frog

Jill Radsken - Boston Herald

Disney, $29.99, Blu-ray $39.99, Blu-ray/DVD combo pack $44.99, with commentary, games and music videos, available Tuesday.: B+

This New Orleans-set story wasn't an instant Disney classic, but it's a solid effort that has everything families expect from the Mouse Ears studio.

There are strong characters, especially the women, a lovable firefly, decent songs and a respectable plot that serves up enough clever dialogue to keep adults engaged.

Critics complained that Tiana, the young black girl with a goal, spends most of the film as a frog, not a princess, but parents raising strong-minded daughters might welcome the clever marketing move. She's a princess long enough to sell the film to the dress-up set, but Tiana's working-class status gives her exponentially better credibility. The disappointing extras are the DVD's only warts. But enjoy a teaser for "Toy Story 3" (with a hilarious cut of a Spanish-speaking Buzz Lightyear), due this summer.
