'Final Destination' is Just the Beginning for St. Pete Actor

Bobby Campo does not think of the fourth "Final Destination" flick as a horror film.

"For me, it's more like an action thriller with a lot of suspense," says the 26-year-old actor from St. Petersburg. "It was pretty cool to work on this one."

Campo, who has been in Hollywood four years, has a co-starring role in "The Final Destination," which opens in theaters Friday.

He plays Nick O'Bannon, a young man who is at a race track when he has visions of a freak pile-up that kills him and his friends.

He persuades his friends to leave moments before the crash. And as with all the previous "Final Destination" films, the young teens learn that they can't cheat death.

As the survivors begin to die one by one, Nick tries to figure a way to escape a similar fate.

"The big difference with this new film is that it's in 3-D, which adds a whole new dimension to the experience," says Campo, who grew up in St. Petersburg as Bobby Camposecco.

In a recent telephone interview, Campo said the 3-D technology is so advanced that it's like nothing that's been done before in the thriller genre. "We made it a year ago and I've been waiting for it to come out," he said. "I feel like it will open more doors for me."

Campo, a graduate of Seminole High School, changed his name when he started getting film roles. In 2005, Campo made his TV film debut in a CBS horror movie "Vampire Bats," starring Lucy Lawless.

He was among several Tampa Bay area actors who were cast in the film that was made in New Orleans. His character was killed by mutant bats.

At the time, Campo was a student at the Performers Studio Workshop in Tampa run by Kathy Laughlin, one of the top casting directors in Florida. "She is amazing and I won't be where I am today without taking her courses," says Campo. "If you can survive her course you can survive anything out here."

Born in Wheeling, W.Va., Campo was 1 year old when his family moved to St. Petersburg. He says his grandfather was a former radio personality, Bob Campo, of WKWK radio in Wheeling.

His father, Bob Camposecco, is a painting contractor. His mother, Donna Camposecco, is a makeup artist who worked with numerous celebrities. She did make up for many of the celebrities who appeared on the Home Shopping Network.

Bob Camposecco says the "Final Destination" film is another step forward in his son's career. "This may get him more recognition and lead to more roles," he says.

Campo also had a role in the recent third sequel to "Legally Blondes" which aired on cable television. He also has appeared on TV shows such as "South Beach," "Greek" and "Mental."

He says that he recently worked on an episode of "Law & Order" which will air this fall. "That was exciting because I was working with all these seasoned actors," he said.

Campo is scheduled to make a public appearance at 7 p.m. Saturday at the BayWalk Muvico 20 in downtown St. Petersburg.
