'Star Wars' Makes TCM Influential List

LOS ANGELES -- Turner Classic Movies has named "Psycho," "Star Wars," "The Birth of a Nation" and "Gone with the Wind" to its list of the most influential films of all time.

Also included on the roster are "Battleship Potemkin," "Metropolis," "42nd Street," "It Happened One Night," "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Stagecoach," "Citizen Kane," "The Searchers," "Bicycle Thieves," "Rashomon" and "Breathless."

"There were some great debates over which movies to include," longtime TCM host Robert Osborne said in a statement. "It's tough to agree on only 15 titles but the ones we selected cover a range of great work."

The list was posted on tcm.com to mark the network's 15th anniversary and to kick off a new online initiative. The network said it will post a fresh list of movie favorites at tcm.com every day. TCM Dailies usually will highlight five films, with a constantly changing theme. The lists will run from serious to silly, such as TCM's favorite car-chase movies, best slap scenes and top sequels, the network said.

"TCM is the leader in classic film, so we thought it would be fun to give our fans a new list to debate every day," Charlie Tabesh, senior vice president of programming for TCM, said in a statement. "We're starting off with the most influential films of all time but we'll look at a huge array of other topics in the future."
