DAYTON -- Jay Tieber said he's been "down some blind alleys" in pulling together the Ohio Liberty Film Festival, which will begin on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11.
"I've also found encouragement and support for continuing this in the future," the Beavercreek man said of the first-time event, which will include six movies over five days at locations including the Neon Movies, 130 E. Fifth St.; the Dayton Engineers Club, 110 E. Monument Ave., and the Dublin Pub, 300 Wayne Ave.
A retired Air Force pilot who also worked in economic development for the state of Ohio, Tieber said he has "no real talent. I can't create a symphony. But I wanted to do something creative."
A trip to eastern Europe and Holocaust sites two years ago made a strong impression on the former Vietnam war transport flier.
"Saving Private Ryan," which will be introduced by Lt. Gen. Dick Reynolds, former Aeronautical Systems Commander at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, stars Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. "The Mission," with Robert DeNiro and Jeremy Irons; and "Papillon," with Dustin Hoffman, also had mainstream exposure.
The keynote film is "The Birth of Freedom," which will be introduced at The Neon by University of Dayton history professor and author Larry Schweikart. The independent film produced by the Acton Institute explores the origins and development of the concept of freedom.
