John Woo Plans Movie of 'Hard-Boiled' Video Game

HONG KONG - John Woo's production company is planning to make an English-language movie based on the video game inspired by his 1992 Cantonese-language gangster thriller "Hard-Boiled," his business partner said Tuesday.

Woo's Los Angeles-based Lion Rock Productions recently hired writers to develop the script for the film adaptation of the 2007 video game "Stranglehold," producer Terence Chang told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

But Woo won't direct the movie. Lion Rock Productions is in talks with Hong Kong director Stephen Fung, Chang said.

"Hard-Boiled," starring Chow Yun-fat and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, is about a Hong Kong police officer seeking to avenge the death of his partner, who was killed by a gun-smuggling ring.

"Stranglehold" revolves around the main character in "Hard-Boiled" played by Chow, Inspector Tequila.

Chang said the movie adaptation of the video game will have a new story but feature scenes from the game.

Woo made his name in Hong Kong with stylish gangster thrillers before moving on to Hollywood, where he directed films like "Broken Arrow," "Face/Off," "Mission: Impossible II" and "Windtalkers."

He returned to Chinese-language film last year with the historical epic "Red Cliff."

Chang said Woo would mostly likely next direct the epic romance "1949," which is set against the Chinese civil war that split mainland China and Taiwan, but he is also considering several Hollywood projects.
