Brit Film-Goers Say Four Weddings is Best

Coventry Evening Telegraph

Four Weddings And A Funeral has beaten off stiff competition to be named the best British movie of all time.

A survey also saw Sir Sean Connery and Sir Anthony Hopkins sharing the title of Britain's favourite actor, while Dame Judi Dench was named best actress.

Richard Curtis's 1994 romantic comedy took 22 per cent of the vote in the poll for Virgin Media, squeaking past Monty Python's Life of Brian by just one per cent. Third was Trainspotting with 15 per cent of the vote.

Casino Royale, starring Daniel Craig as James Bond, made it into fourth place with 10 per cent and Guy Ritchie's gangster film Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels came fifth.

The top 10 was completed with Lawrence of Arabia, Withnail and I, Atonement, The Wicker Man and Get Carter.

Dame Judi took nearly a third of the votes in the best actress poll, more than double that of her nearest rivals Dame Helen Mirren and Julie Walters.
