Teens Gather Games for Heroes

Valerie Gorchinski - Military.com

It’s amazing what teenagers can do when they put down their video games for a minute and decide to make a difference. That’s exactly what two teens from New York have done. Over their spring break, Peter Gallagher and Jack Wilson spent a week at elementary schools in New York state talking to young students about what troops are facing and the hardships they deal with while deployed. From that sprang a letter-writing campaign they dubbed “Cheer up the Troops” in which they collected hundreds of letters that they sent along to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan with the help of MarineParents.com.

Now they’re thinking even bigger. When they realized that the second most requested items next to letters are handheld games, they became even more inspired.

Their new effort is titled "Games For Heroes", and they are working in conjunction with MarineParents.com once again. "Games For Heroes" is gathering new and used (but still working) handheld games and batteries in addition to cash donations that they will use to purchase new items.

The boys have a new goal of collecting 10,000 hand held video game machines. They are collecting PSPs, Gameboys, and Nintendo DS systems.
